What Is MultiBit Wallet?
MultiBit was a lightweight Bitcoin wallet that made it practical for everyday users to manage their own Bitcoin. Developed by Jim Burton starting in 2011, it became one of the most widely used Bitcoin wallets during the early cryptocurrency era.
Lightweight Design
Unlike Bitcoin Core, MultiBit didn't require downloading the entire blockchain, making it accessible to everyday users.
Pioneer (2011-2017)
Active from 2011 to 2017, MultiBit served users during Bitcoin's formative years before being discontinued.
Millions of Users
At its peak, MultiBit was one of the most downloaded Bitcoin wallets and a default recommendation on bitcoin.org for several years.
Two Versions of MultiBit
MultiBit existed in two main versions, each with different technical architectures:
- MultiBit Classic (2011-2015) — The original version that stored Bitcoin using individual private keys in
.keyand.walletfiles. Each address had its own private key that needed to be backed up separately. - MultiBit HD (2015-2017) — The "HD" stands for "Hierarchical Deterministic." This version used a 12 or 24-word seed phrase (mnemonic) to generate all wallet addresses, stored in
.wallet.aesencrypted files.
Why Do People Still Need MultiBit?
Despite being discontinued, many users still need MultiBit for several important reasons:
