    Choose Your MultiBit Version

    MultiBit was released in two distinct versions with different architectures. Choose the correct version based on when you created your wallet and what type of backup you have.

    MultiBit Classic

    Version 0.5.x (2011-2015)

    How to Identify Your Version

    Not sure which version you used? Here's how to determine which MultiBit version created your wallet:

    Check Your Wallet Files

    The file extensions tell you which version was used:

    • .wallet and .key files — You used MultiBit Classic. The .key file contains your private keys.
    • .wallet.aes files — You used MultiBit HD. The wallet is encrypted with your password.
    • Written 12 or 24-word phrase — You used MultiBit HD. This seed phrase can restore your entire wallet.

    Check the Installation Folder

    The default installation locations were:

    MultiBit Classic:

    • Windows: C:\Program Files\MultiBit\
    • Mac: /Applications/MultiBit.app/
    • Linux: ~/MultiBit/

    MultiBit HD:

    • Windows: C:\Program Files\MultiBitHD\
    • Mac: /Applications/MultiBitHD.app/
    • Linux: ~/MultiBitHD/

    System Requirements

    MultiBit was built with Java, so it runs on most operating systems. However, compatibility with modern systems may vary:

    Windows

    XP, Vista, 7, 8, 10

    macOS

    10.7 - 10.14

    Linux

    Most distributions

    Compatibility Note
    MultiBit may not work correctly on modern operating systems like Windows 11 or macOS Monterey and later. If you experience issues, consider using a virtual machine with an older OS, or use our recovery guides to extract your keys without running the full application.

    After Downloading

    Once you've downloaded MultiBit, follow these steps to safely recover your Bitcoin:

    1. Install on an isolated computer — If possible, use a computer that isn't connected to the internet for added security.
    2. Locate your wallet files — Find your .wallet,.key, or .wallet.aes files from your backup.
    3. Open the wallet — Launch MultiBit and open your wallet file.
    4. Export your private keys — Follow our export guide to safely extract your keys.
    5. Transfer to a modern wallet — Import your keys into Electrum or another maintained wallet.

    Troubleshooting Download Issues

    If you encounter problems downloading or installing MultiBit:

    • Antivirus warnings — Some antivirus software may flag MultiBit as potentially unwanted. This is because the software is old and unsigned. If you trust the source, you can usually add an exception.
    • Java errors — MultiBit requires Java. The installers usually include a compatible Java version, but you may need to install Java separately.
    • Network sync failures — Don't worry if MultiBit won't sync with the network. You can still export your private keys offline.
