MultiBit Transaction Not Showing: Troubleshooting Guide

Sent or received Bitcoin not appearing in MultiBit? Learn how to verify transactions on the blockchain and recover missing funds.

    Important Warning
If a transaction isn't showing in MultiBit, it's most likely a sync issue, not a lost transaction. Transactions that appear on the blockchain are permanent and cannot be "lost."

Why Transactions Don't Appear in MultiBit

MultiBit relies on synchronization with the Bitcoin network to display transactions. Since MultiBit's infrastructure was shut down, this sync process is broken. Here's what might be happening:

    Sync Stopped

MultiBit can't sync with the Bitcoin network anymore. Any transactions that occurred after your last successful sync won't appear.

    Unconfirmed Transaction

If you sent Bitcoin with a low fee, it may be stuck waiting for confirmation. However, by now (years later), it would have either confirmed or been dropped.

    Wrong Wallet Open

You might be viewing a different wallet file than the one associated with the transaction.

    Transaction Never Broadcast

If MultiBit crashed or lost connection while sending, the transaction may never have been broadcast to the network.

    Step 1: Check the Blockchain

The blockchain is the source of truth. If a transaction appears there, it happened. If it doesn't, it either never happened or never confirmed.

    Checking a Sent Transaction

If you sent Bitcoin and it's not showing:

    1. Find your sending address in MultiBit
    2. Go to a blockchain explorer (blockchain.com, blockchair.com, mempool.space)
    3. Search for your address
    4. Look at the transaction history

If the transaction appears: The Bitcoin was sent successfully. It just isn't showing in MultiBit due to sync issues.

If no transaction appears: The send may have failed. Your Bitcoin might still be in your wallet.

    Checking a Received Transaction

If you're expecting to receive Bitcoin:

    1. Get the receiving address you gave to the sender
    2. Search for it on a blockchain explorer
    3. Check if the incoming transaction appears

If the transaction appears: The Bitcoin arrived. MultiBit just can't see it due to sync failure.

If no transaction appears: The sender may not have actually sent it, or it hasn't confirmed yet.

    Step 2: Understand Transaction Status

    Confirmed Transactions

A transaction with 1 or more confirmations is permanent. It cannot be reversed. If the blockchain shows your transaction as confirmed, the Bitcoin has definitely moved. The number of confirmations increases over time as new blocks are mined.

    Unconfirmed Transactions

A transaction with 0 confirmations is waiting to be included in a block. If a transaction was made years ago with MultiBit and still shows as unconfirmed, it likely was never broadcast or was dropped from the mempool. After weeks/months, unconfirmed transactions are forgotten by the network.

    Transaction Not Found

If the blockchain explorer says "Transaction not found" when you search for a transaction ID (TXID), it means the transaction was never successfully broadcast. This can happen if MultiBit crashed during sending or lost connection before propagating the transaction.

Step 3: What to Do Based on Your Situation

Scenario A: Transaction Shows on Blockchain, Not in MultiBit

This is simply a sync issue. Your Bitcoin is exactly where it should be.

For sent transactions: The Bitcoin has successfully moved to the recipient. Nothing more needs to be done.

For received transactions: The Bitcoin is in your address. To access it, you need to recover your wallet using a modern wallet like Electrum, which will show the correct balance.

Scenario B: Transaction Doesn't Appear Anywhere

For a transaction you tried to send:

    • • Check your balance on the blockchain. If your Bitcoin is still there, the send failed.
    • • You can try sending again using a recovered wallet in Electrum.
    • • Do NOT attempt to re-send from MultiBit (it won't work properly).

For an expected incoming transaction: Contact the sender to verify they actually sent the transaction. Ask them for the transaction ID (TXID) so you can look it up.

Scenario C: Very Old Pending Transaction

If MultiBit shows a transaction as "pending" or "unconfirmed" from years ago:

    • • This transaction probably never completed.
    • • The network has long since forgotten about it.
    • • Your Bitcoin should still be at the original address.
    • • Verify by checking your address on a blockchain explorer.
    • • If funds are there, recover them using Electrum.

    Accessing Your Bitcoin

If your Bitcoin exists on the blockchain but MultiBit won't show it, the solution is to recover your wallet using a modern Bitcoin wallet that actually syncs with the network.

    Key Points to Remember

    • • The blockchain is the ultimate record - not MultiBit's display
    • • If a transaction is confirmed on the blockchain, it's permanent
    • • MultiBit's sync issues are display problems, not actual money problems
    • • To see accurate balances, recover your wallet in a modern Bitcoin wallet
    • • Old unconfirmed transactions have been forgotten by the network
